Daejeon is rushing its way on attracting the 7th United Cities and Local Governments World Congress (UCLG World Congress) in 2022. A delegation of Daejeon, including international relations ambassador Lee Eun-Cheol, has been sent to UCLG’s major member cities this July, including Belgium, Spain, and Gabon.

UCLG World Congress is an organization that represents the interests of local governments on the world stage. It is headquartered in Barcelona and aims to be the united voice and world advocate of local self-governments through mutual cooperation. UCLG World Congress is held every three years and for 2022, the hosting city will be confirmed on the 6th Congress held in South Africa in November 2019.

An official from Daejeon City stated that the delegation met promises of full support in the meeting with Mr. Frédéric Vallier, the secretary general of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR), provided that no other candidates desire to be the host city. A similar pledge for support was given by Mr. Jean Pierre Elong Mbassi, the secretary general of UCLG Africa, after ambassador Lee’s speech in the executive meeting of the African branch. Emilia Sáiz, UCLG World Secretary General, gave compliments to Daejeon for its active approach toward the event, providing the delegates with substantial guidance.

Currently, Daejeon’s major rivals are the two cities of the European branch including Mannheim of Germany, and Buenos Aires of Argentina. As the unity within cities of the European branch ensures competitiveness, and the current UCLG World secretariat being in Spain, the European cities hold great threat against Daejeon.

To secure the hosting city of UCLG World Congress, support from seven consecutive secretary generals of continental branches is necessary as well as the chairs of UCLG World. Daejeon currently holds support from four continents. Support from Daejeon's sister cities will be essential for hosting the event.

Daejeon will promote itself in the ASEAN Mayors Forum of Bangkok, Thailand, starting from August 26, and the UCLG ASPAC executive committee from September 4. If necessary, mayor Her, Tae-Jeong of Daejeon is prepared to arrange a meeting with the chairs of UCLG World to show the city’s determination for this matter.
